Bog Oak - a glimpse into the past

Bogs have always, by virtue of their enchanted and unreal atmosphere, lent wings to the imagination of people – even today, standing at the edge of a bog, one can but wonder if he is glimpsing a different, bygone era.

Bog Oaks offer a connection to this era, being oftentimes thousands of years old, they are found in drained swamps, old quarries or meadows. In these environments fallen trees can be sealed within the ground, kept from sunlight and oxygen and therefore protected from decay. The special quality of the surrounding environment slowly changes the color of the wood, turning its every shade from brown to deepest black.

One of the most spectacular logs of this specialty has shortly been sliced into veneer here in Karlstadt – with 2,500sqm in a length of 3.55m it is unique in quality and consistency. Its age has scientifically been determined to be over 2,840 years and the log thus predates human civilisation in big parts of Europe.
